Sibyl Sings

label for music & poetry

* * *

Sibyl Sings is an independent label for music and poetry, which launched in 2008. It was initially set up to give way to new works of Lily Kiara, singer/songwriter and poet. Lily had made two albums before Sibyl Sings came to life, both independently, yet they did not have a home of sorts. The label offers the care of producing the continuation of her work in the way she likes to make, play and sing.

Sibyl Sings goes beyond the work of one artist though and is also created to produce albums of other musicians and poets. An important part of Sibyl Sings is to produce, besides those with music and songs, albums with poetry and spoken word. It supports and encourages different ways in which poetry can be recorded to listen to again and again. Some poetry asks to simply and perhaps only live on the page. Other poems live their lives most when spoken, some with and others without music. Those are the ones we choose from. Sibyl Sings wishes to make poetry available the way songs are. And perhaps it also works the other way around, that through listening to poetry, the listening to songs is affected and we can hear more of their lyrics.

The first album produced by Sibyl Sings is a solo album with songs by Lily Kiara, titled On this Ground. It was released in January 2008. It is an album with mostly songs and two short poems. All songs by Lily with Felicity Provan on cornet on two songs and Andy Moor on electric guitar on the title song. Mastered by ColinMcLean. You can find more information about this album, including reviews, and how to purchase it by clicking on the album cover below.

The second album, that is currently in the making, is by poet Julyen Hamilton (ENG/E). The work title is 'Fish in Water'. It will be an abundant package with 2 cds; one with studio recordings and one with live recordings of readings Julyen Hamilton performed solo or with musicians. His poems are in English.

The depth of imagination in the poetry of Julyen Hamilton takes you into spaces and stories both familiar and unfamiliar. Always through suprising views, unexpectedly turning around the corner where you did not dare to look or simply did not think of, but where, once taken there, all seems so strangely at ease through both the lightness and insight with which the poem evolves and unfolds itself. The musicality and physicality of his reading voice add to his poetry as a matter of the heart and touch you right in the heart of the matter. And when the poem is over, it lets you roam some more on your own as if it has opened lands at once more accessible.

As we wish to steer the making and let it steer us as we go along, we don't give an exact release date yet, but this year 2010 it can be expected and when we are getting closer, it will be noted here. Something to look forward to! And if you wish to be informed about it you can send a mail to this address and you will be updated about Sibyl Sings concerts and releases.

You can go directly to the site of Julyen Hamilton to find some of his writings. You can check this page of the label for updates.

" Making cds and having something tangible when the songs and poems are recorded, the act of taking the cd out of the package and looking at the images and reading the words, even if they are 'only' the names of the artists, is part of the listening. I love these feedings of the imaginations that can go along with the music. So, we take care of the whole package and make it worthwhile to look at and listen to a cd from Sibyl Sings."
